One of the most surprising things to me after getting involved in the fight against abortion is the response that I received from pastors. It took me completely off guard. The reason for this I believe is that all the pastors I had known over the years I assumed were against abortion and I assumed would be eager to get behind any and all efforts to stop it. I assumed that pastors would also be open to helping efforts to get more Christians into the fight. I could not have been more wrong. And it is at this point I know many people sign-off and don’t listen to me. It is at this point I believe an element of blindness and denial kicks in.
I understand that. There is part of me that wants to not believe that pastors would not support real efforts to stop the killing. I want to give the benefit of the doubt to the many good guys that I know and love. But the facts do not support a benefit of the doubt because there is little doubt when I see stuff like what you see in this video over and over.
But this is an example of what I have found to be all to common. I am not saying all pastors would respond the way Sonny Hernandez did here. But Mr. Hernandez is not alone and not the first or most likely the last to do this. It is far more common than you think. And this is what I believe is the biggest problem in the fight against abortion. The biggest problem is not the abortion doctor who is killing the babies. The biggest problem is Christian leaders who have been given a position of influence, control of resources, and God’s word, are then neglecting the weightier matters and opposing efforts to spur the Church to stop the killing.
It is way easier for an abolitionist to go to the abortion center and call people to repent of killing their children than it is for the abolitionist to go to local gatherings of christians (churches) to call them to repent of ignoring the killing.
The men arguing with the abolitionist seem to imply that they are at the abortion centers “every day”. If they are that is great. But make no mistake that it is an extremely small number of Christians that routinely spend time at the killing centers trying to rescue the children. And make no mistake that the abortion center is not the problem but rather a symptom of the problem. We need to call the culture to repent and turn to Christ everywhere. We need to call out the sin of abortion in every place. And the first place should be where God’s people gather and where many are complicit in or complacent about abortion.
Probably the most common tactic of those who oppose abolition, in my experience anyway, is that tactic of changing the subject. Notice how Mr. Hernandez is constantly concerned about who the abolitionists elders are or that he isn’t part of a government institutionalized church. It is as if that is the real crisis at hand. Notice how Mr. Hernandez continuously brings up the “offense” of the abolitionist not doing what he was told. It is far easier for any man to discredit another person with how rude he is for not taking no for an answer than it is for a man to discredit another for having a great concern for stopping a mass killing. In the analysis of what is important to Mr. Hernandez, one would have to conclude that ignoring his authority over what information is shared at his conference is worse than the apathy in the church about child killing. This is a classic example of being very religious while ignoring the weightier matters of the law.
